Custom Equipment & Engineered Industrial Systems

When an off-the-shelf answer does not fit the plant problem, the equipment has to be developed around it. Steel Square can build custom equipment and engineered systems around what the facility needs the system to do, what it connects to and the constraints around the installation.

The problem

Start With the Plant Problem

  • No off-the-shelf machine fits the problem
  • The load, process or space rules out a standard unit
  • A concept needs engineering through to installation
  • The equipment has to connect to existing systems

What it is

About Custom Equipment & Engineered Systems

Custom equipment and engineered systems are machines and assemblies designed and fabricated for a specific problem when a standard product does not fit. It solves a handling or process problem that no standard machine addresses, from concept through design, fabrication, controls and installation.

When Nothing in a Catalogue Fits

Custom equipment covers everything from a modification of an existing machine, through a fabricated transfer, frame or fixture, to a complete engineered machine with its own controls.

Most of it begins as a constraint rather than an ambition. A product does not suit a standard machine. A footprint will not take one. Two systems that were never designed to meet each other now have to. The question is whether that gets designed once and built to fit, or worked around every shift for years.

Start With the Plant Problem

The process begins with what the facility needs the system to do, what it has to connect to and what constraints exist around the installation. The equipment is developed around that problem rather than selected only because it already exists in a catalog.

The Range of Custom Work

At the small end are modifications: a guard reshaped, a chute changed, an infeed adapted to a product it was not built for.

In the middle are fabricated assemblies that fill a gap between machines, which is the most common category by volume and the least visible.

At the large end is engineered equipment with its own frame, drive and controls, built because the application genuinely has no standard answer.

Knowing which of the three a problem needs is worth more than the build itself, because the wrong answer is usually the expensive one.

Engineering & Visualization

Steel Square can develop layouts and engineered concepts, and can use 3D visualization to show a proposed installation or finished concept before field work begins when that helps the customer understand the plan.

Build & Integration

The same project can continue into sourcing, fabrication, controls, installation, electrical integration and commissioning so the design is connected to how the equipment will actually be installed and used.

That continuity matters most on custom work. A one-off machine has no installation manual and no precedent, so the people who designed it being involved when it goes in is not a convenience.

Scope

Steel Square can carry custom equipment and engineered systems from concept through engineering, sourcing, fabrication, controls, installation, commissioning and handoff.

FAQ

Buyer FAQ

Can Steel Square take a custom machine from concept through startup?

Yes. Steel Square can take a custom machine or engineered system through concept, engineering and design, sourcing, fabrication, controls, installation, commissioning and handoff when the project fits.

When does a custom machine make sense over a standard one?

When a standard product does not fit the load, the process or the space. Steel Square can carry that from concept and design through fabrication, controls and installation.
