ASRS Integration, Repair & Modernization

Automated storage and retrieval systems depend on mechanical equipment, controls, sensors, electrical components, cable management and interfaces working together. When one part fails, the issue can stop a much larger storage or picking process.

The problem

ASRS Faults & Downtime

  • A crane or component failure stops storage and picking
  • Cable carriers, terminations or controls are failing
  • An aging ASRS is getting harder to support
  • New work has to fit a system designed years ago

What it is

About ASRS & Automated Storage

Automated storage and retrieval systems store and retrieve loads under machine control, using cranes, carousels, lifts and the controls that coordinate them. They raise storage density and retrieval speed. When a component fails, a much larger storage or picking process can stop with it.

  • ASRS Cranes
  • Mini-Load ASRS / AKL
  • Carousel Picking Systems

What an ASRS Is

An automated storage and retrieval system puts loads away and brings them back without an operator driving the machine. A crane, shuttle or carousel runs a fixed path inside racking, and software decides what moves, when and to where.

Unit-load systems handle full pallets in deep racking. Mini-load and AKL systems handle totes and cases at picking speed. Carousels bring the storage to a stationary operator rather than sending the operator to the storage. The choice between them is set by load size, throughput and how much building height is available.

Why an ASRS Fault Is Never Minor

There is no manual fallback for a crane aisle. That single fact separates ASRS support from most other material handling work.

When a forklift breaks down, another forklift finishes the job. When a crane stops, the inventory in that aisle is unreachable, and if it is the aisle holding fast-moving stock the effect reaches shipping within hours. Recovery also has to happen inside a structure designed for a machine rather than a person, at height, often with power isolated and the aisle emptied first.

What Actually Fails

Cable and cable-carrier assemblies are the most common wear point on a moving crane, because they flex on every cycle and fail at the flex rather than at the connector.

After that, drive and positioning components, encoders and photo eyes that lose their reference, and the control platform itself, which on a system installed fifteen years ago is often the part that is hardest to replace.

ASRS Support Across the System

Steel Square can work across the mechanical, electrical and controls needs around an automated-storage system. That can include cable carriers and cabling, terminations, field fabrication, access platforms, controls troubleshooting, component replacement, startup and other work required to return the system to operation.

Integration & Retrofit

Existing ASRS installations often need new components, controls changes or supporting equipment integrated into a system that was designed years earlier. Steel Square can help fit new work into the existing environment, including mechanical modifications, controls and electrical integration, commissioning and follow-up support.

Repair & Modernization

A damaged or aging automated-storage system does not automatically require full replacement. Steel Square can evaluate repair, parts, cable management, controls, fabricated components and modernization needs, then determine the practical path based on the system and failure.

The mechanical structure of an ASRS routinely outlives its controls by a decade or more, which makes these among the strongest retrofit candidates in a facility.

Project Proof

Steel Square project scope at Walgreens Anderson includes ASRS racking and crane equipment. Steel Square also completed corrective repair, testing and return-to-service work on ASRS Crane 9 at Walgreens Windsor.

FAQ

Buyer FAQ

Can Steel Square work on an existing ASRS?

Yes. Existing-system support is a core part of the current ASRS position, including repair, controls, retrofit, maintenance, integration and return-to-service work.

Does an aging ASRS have to be replaced?

Not automatically. Steel Square can evaluate repair, parts, cable management, controls and fabricated components first, then determine the practical path based on the system and the failure.
